The Town of Ashwaubenon was created in March of 1872. It extended from the Fox River on the east to the Oneida reservation on the west, and included heavily wooded areas, wetlands, and small farms. The total population was less than 400.

One hundred years later, as Ashwaubenon celebrated its Centennial, The Ashwaubenon Historical Society was created to preserve the Town’s history. It became an independent non-profit in 1976, and is affiliated with the Wisconsin State Historical Society.

The Society’s first museum opened in 1977 in two classrooms in the historic Cormier School, built in 1913. It was then moved to the former Water Department building in 1998, and into its present location in the former Community Center in 2016.
